EN 812:2012

European Standard specifies physical and performance requirements, methods of test and marking requirements for industrial bump caps.

Key Requirements:

  • Materials: Caps must be made from durable materials resistant to aging, temperature variations, and UV exposure.
  • Design and Construction: Bump caps must provide a comfortable fit, be lightweight, and include proper ventilation. They should feature an adjustable retention system (e.g., chin strap) to ensure stability.
  • Impact Resistance: Caps must absorb energy from low-energy impacts (impact force < 12 J), unlike hard hats.
  • Penetration Resistance: They must resist penetration by sharp objects from a specified height, but the requirement is less stringent than for hard hats.
  • Field of Vision: The design should not obstruct the wearer’s peripheral vision.
  • Flammability: Materials used must pass fire resistance tests to ensure they don't easily ignite.

Testing Requirements:

  • Impact Test: A 5 kg striker is dropped from 250 mm height, testing the cap’s ability to reduce the force of minor impacts.
  • Penetration Test: A pointed object is dropped from a specified height to ensure the cap can resist light penetration.
  • Retention and Stability: The cap’s retention system must keep it securely on the head during use, ensuring it doesn’t shift or fall off.
  • Flammability Test: The cap's materials must not easily catch fire when exposed to a small flame for a set period.
