Since 2016, Red Handling UK have been part of the London Gatwick Airport community. Operating from both North and South terminals, Red Handling pride themselves on their history of safety and reliability, with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) forming a major part of this.

The Situation

Working in the aviation sector poses significant risks and health and safety concerns. Ramp handling and aircraft de-icing meant Red Handling required effective, safe, and comfortable protective gloves to protect from abrasion, hand fatigue, and ever-changing weather conditions. The Skytec Beta 1 gloves are one of the lightest gloves in the industry, making them ideal for workers at Red Handling who need excellent protection, without compromising on dexterity.

Another high-risk hazard in the aviation industry is jet blast, referring to the rapid air movement produced by jet engines, particularly before or on take-off. For workers exposed to this, they are at risk of flying dust and debris causing eye injuries. Strong, robust, and comfortable eye protection is needed to ensure workers stay safe at all times of the day.

The Outcome

Being an increasingly inclusive workplace, Red Handling’s workforce included female contract workers, who often can struggle to find well-fitting PPE that would not compromise safety.

Providing gloves that are too big could lead to them being trapped in moving parts or a decrease in grip and comfort, and ill-fitting eyewear would compromise safety by allowing flying dust and debris to come into contact with the eyes.

The Skytec Beta 1 gloves are available in extra small sizing, to ensure all workers can experience the same high-level of protection, regardless of their hand size. Globus’ eyewear brand, Riley, also is available in inclusive sizing, with the Stream Evo Small specifically designed for smaller face shapes, whilst still offering a wide field of vision.
