GUIDE TO FFP PROTECTION LEVELS

DISPOSABLE RESPIRATORS OFFER VARYING LEVELS OF PROTECTION AGAINST AIRBORNE PARTICLES SUCH AS DUSTS, MISTS AND FUMES.

Markings such as FFP1, FFP2 or FFP3 (as per EN 149:2001+Al 2009) indicate the protection level that can be obtained if the respirator is a good fit and used correctly. The higher the number, the greater the protection.

WHAT IS WEL AND APF?

Workplace Exposure Limits (WEL) are levels of contamination (set by HSE) of the concentration of an airborne substance, above which level precautions must be taken if exposure takes place.

APF is the Assigned Protection Factor (APF) allocated to each type and class of respiratory protective equipment (RPE). The APF number rating indicates how much protection the respiratory protection is able to offer. For example, an RPE device with an APF of 20 will reduce the wearer's exposure by at least a factor of 20 when used correctly.

PROTECTION FACTORS

A protection factor is based on analysis of the area calculated by using EH40/2005 workplace exposure limits guidance (HSE). FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3 respirators can reduce the amount of airborne particles you breathe using protection factors of 4, 10 and 20 respectively.

FFP1

EN 149:2001+A1:2009

Reduces the wearer’s exposure to airborne particles by a FACTOR OF 4.

PROTECTS AGAINST

  • Non-toxic dusts

  • Water / oil based particulates

FFP2

EN 149:2001+A1:2009

Reduces the wearer’s exposure to airborne particles by a FACTOR OF 10.

PROTECTS AGAINST

  • Fine toxic dusts, mists and fumes

  • Water / oil based particulates

FFP3

EN 149:2001+A1:2009

Reduces the wearer’s exposure to airborne particles by a FACTOR OF 20.

  • Very fine toxic dusts, mists and fumes

  • Water / oil based particulates

  • Metal fumes and nuisance level organic vapours (charcoal filter variant)
