Uniper is an international energy company that operates over 22 GW of generation capacity in Europe, which ranks Uniper amongst the world’s largest power producers. Compliance, especially in Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), is a top priority for Uniper as a worldwide company, emphasising optimal worker safety. The company and its roughly 7,000 employees make an important contribution to supply security in Europe, particularly in its core markets of Germany, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands. 

The Situation

Ensuring top-quality eye protection for a large workforce was crucial for Uniper. The company was initially using the Edenred Voucher Eyewear Scheme, offering some flexibility to use various options but like most vouchers it has validity issues and requires upfront purchasing.

Uniper identified the need for a revision, as they were not using high-impact resistance and robust polycarbonate lenses. Instead, they were using CR39 safety lenses, which can lead to scratched lenses, potentially obstructing vision.

The Solution

Upon contacting Globus, Uniper requested their Riley On-Site testing for all employees to upgrade their safety eyewear, including prescription options for those who required it.

A representative from Globus worked closely with Uniper to establish a flexible working plan to ensure all employees were examined and provided with an on-site eye test. An appointment schedule was provided in advance, enabling Uniper to allocate times for each employee and guide the Globus representative during their visit.

The Globus team conducted on-site testing over 5 full days, accommodating various shift patterns to ensure all employees received the correct safety glasses with certification. With the fast-paced environment of Uniper, Globus ensured that schedules could be flexibly reworked, and every shift pattern was covered, to ensure that no employee missed their consultation. The Optician, Vip, was also invaluable in making the process efficient, demonstrating exceptional flexibility.

The Benefits

The advantages of using the Riley On-Site and RX Connect Service were commended by Sarah Hodges and Chris Stenson at Uniper, with employees being extremely impressed by the adaptability, and efficiency of both Globus representatives and the service itself.

Employees received well-fitting eyewear with protection from hazards, including prescription lenses, eliminating the need for safety goggles over regular lenses. The new Riley safety glasses provided all incorporated polycarbonate lenses, ensuring increased durability and protection without obstructing vision. Polycarbonate is a tough, transparent plastic that's highly resistant to impacts and scratches, making it an ideal replacement for the CR38 lenses they were previously using.

A noticeable improvement to Uniper’s prior safety glasses approach was the Riley eyewear database service allowing Uniper to easily request replacements for lost or damaged safety glasses by providing the employee's name. This streamlined system ensures the prompt dispatch of a new pair of safety glasses within a few days.

Another improvement was the lead time for safety glasses was significantly reduced from a month to 7-10 working days through the Riley RX service.

We were extremely impressed with the service Globus provided with their Riley On-Site service. They have been exceptionally adaptable, and efficient throughout the whole process of using their services and equipping the employees with exceptional safety eyewear. Despite initial reluctance from some employees, the new service received positive feedback once they experienced the quality and efficiency provided by the Globus team.
